Christian Pulisic set to face Newcastle after missing out on Toon transfer

Newcastle are set to face Chelsea in the Premier League tonight, which means they are coming up against former transfer target Christian Pulisic.

The Magpies are third in the table and six points ahead of Chelsea, which is a huge surprise after six games. And that is despite the fact Eddie Howe wasn’t able to secure all of his summer transfer targets.

Newcastle made some great additions, but they still wanted to add a centre midfielder and a winger to their squad. And they were hoping for a helping hand from Chelsea.

Dan Ashworth looked at four players from Stamford Bridge: Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi, Armando Broja and Conor Gallagher.

Any one of them would have been a good addition, but Pulisic was the most exciting. And he was the one Newcastle wanted most.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the Magpies were ‘obsessed‘ with signing the £58million man. However, Ashworth’s inability to offer a loan with an option to buy prevented him from moving to St James’ Park.

That was disappointing as the player and club could have been a great match, and now Pulisic could play on Tyneside for the first time since his failed transfer.

Chance for Pulisic to see what he could’ve won at Newcastle

It’s a Saturday evening game and the last one before the World Cup. And Newcastle are in sensational form. Everything is gearing up for a sensational night underneath the lights at St James’ Park.

The atmosphere should be electric, and that could be painful for Pulisic to experience.

The American was keen for a move away from Stamford Bridge – frustrated with life under Thomas Tuchel. While the manager has changed, Pulisic’s fortunes have not.

The 24-year-old isn’t doing much better under Graham Potter, and must regret not being able to join Newcastle during the summer – especially given how well we are doing.

Instead he will be part of the away side, tasked with stopping the juggernaut that is Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

A home win and a raucous SJP will perhaps make him wish he was wearing black and white rather than blue.
