Allan Saint-Maximin is a sensational footballer, and Newcastle teammate Chris Wood thinks he can get even better in the coming years.

While the Magpies have been flying this season, the Frenchman has endured a tough campaign. He has seriously struggled with injury which has hindered his minutes on the pitch.

The 25-year-old returned just before the World Cup break, meaning he now has more than a month off to ensure he is fit for the second half of the Premier League campaign.

We have seen magic moments from ASM this season. He tore Manchester City apart, while he scored an outrageous volley to win a point against Wolves.

However, we have also seen Newcastle thrive without him. Eddie Howe has taken his side to third in the Premier League, and is doing what Steve Bruce couldn’t. He has found a way to win games without Saint-Maximin.

But the number 10 is still an important player at St James’ Park, and Wood believes the best is yet to come from his teammate.

Wood on Saint-Maximin

The New Zealand international has spoke to Eurosport, and heaped praise on Saint-Maximin, before waxing lyrical about his potential.

“We have a lot of good players here and Allan is definitely one of them,” Wood said.

“He shows a lot of talent on the field and on the training ground and has the potential to achieve anything he wants. I think in the future he can be one of the best in the world.”

More to come from ASM

We have seen multiple players improve under Howe, but that is yet to happen with Saint-Maximin. But that doesn’t mean it won’t.

If he can be the next player to be transformed by Howe then we will have one hell of a talent in our ranks.

Saint-Maximin is already a magician. His dribbling ability is outstanding, and he can do things that others can’t even dream of.

But we need to see more consistency in his performances. We need to see more goals and assists. And we need to see an ability to press and function in a Howe team.

Combine those elements together, and Saint-Maximin truly could be one of the best around. He has the raw talent, there is no doubting that.

In the next few years we will see if Wood is right and if ASM can achieve his potential in a black and white shirt. Hopefully he does, because that means Newcastle fans will be watching a very exciting player wear the number 10.
