Chris Wood will hope that he can play an influential role for Newcastle United against Liverpool. Reds manager Jurgen Klopp complained about the physicality of Wood and other Burnley players when the teams met earlier in the season.
The German claimed that some of the rules of the Premier League were more suited to wrestling. He stated, “We have to stick to protecting the players. We cannot deny that. If you like that sort of thing, watch wrestling.” (Sky Sports)
But this time round Wood now plays for Newcastle after joining in January. The Toon triggered Burnley’s £25 million release clause (Sky Sports). They needed more options up front with Callum Wilson sustaining an injury last December.
Wood and Newcastle will have the home advantage, which could help cause an upset
Since the arrival of the new owners and Eddie Howe, St James’ Park has become a fortress once again. The last time they lost at home in the league was a 4-0 defeat to Man City in December.
So Jurgen Klopp will know it’s going to be a real challenge for his title-chasing side. Wood will look to use his physicality against the Liverpool backline.
The New Zealand international has found it difficult to find the net on a consistent basis. He has netted against Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers. He’ll be hoping he can add another for Newcastle against Liverpool this weekend.
For Klopp and Liverpool, they’ll be looking to keep the pressure on Manchester City. The Reds are only a point behind Pep Guardiola’s side. Both teams will be hoping the other drops points to Newcastle. The Magpies’ next game after Liverpool is against Man City.
The Toon will ideally want points from both clashes. Their focus will be on making a push for the top ten. They currently sit in 9th place in the league. Which is such a difference from where they were a few months ago. Some fans had written them off as dead and buried.
