Chris Sutton predicts what the score will be between ‘flat’ Newcastle United and Liverpool

Chris Sutton believes Newcastle United are ‘certainly capable’ of getting a result against Liverpool on Wednesday night.

It has been a disappointing return to action for Newcastle United, who have picked up just one point from games against West Ham United and Crystal Palace.

Now they face a Liverpool side that are top of the Premier League and have beaten Real Madrid and Manchester City in their previous two games. To make matters worse, the Magpies have not beaten Liverpool since 2015.

Everything points towards Eddie Howe’s side falling short against the Reds, with Paul Merson predicting Liverpool will beat Newcastle.

That is a view shared by Chris Sutton, who has told BBC Sport that he simply cannot go against Arne Slot’s side when predicting Wednesday’s game at St James’ Park.

“Newcastle have looked a little flat recently, and have been lacking a cutting edge,” he said.

“This is still a tough game for Liverpool, though, off the back of such a big week for them with wins over Real Madrid and Manchester City.

“The Magpies have already beaten Arsenal at St James’ Park this season and they are certainly capable of getting something against Liverpool too, but you just cannot back against the leaders at the moment.

“Arne Slot has such great strength in depth right through his squad and they can win games in different ways. Even if they do drop points here, their bubble is not going to burst anytime soon.”

Newcastle receive injury boost ahead of facing Liverpool

Sutton thinks Newcastle are capable of getting a result against Liverpool, but he is not confident enough to actually predict that outcome. In fairness, I do not blame him.

The Magpies go into this game as major underdogs, in need of a result in a fixture they desperately struggle in.

But there is some good news ahead of Wednesday night’s game at St James’ Park. Alexander Isak suffered an injury against Crystal Palace on Saturday, but he is going to be fit enough to face the Reds.

The 25-year-old did not suffer a muscle injury, and has told beIN Sports that he is fit and available to play against Liverpool.

That is a big boost, as it means Howe can continue to name Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever in his starting lineup. The alternative would have been Anthony Gordon up front, as Howe still appears to reluctant to play Callum Wilson more than he needs to following his return from injury.

Isak has a decent record against Liverpool, scoring two goals in four games. However, both of his goals have come at Anfield, rather than St James’ Park.
