West Ham United host Newcastle United today in the Premier League with the sides occupying seventh and eighth place in the league respectively.
Newcastle and West Ham are separated by just one point going into this afternoon’s fixture and a win for the Magpies could see them leap up into fifth in the table if other results go their way.
At this early stage of the season league position isn’t overly important, it’s just about the points on the board. It’s about keeping pace with the leading pack.
Newcastle still have a depleted squad heading to West Ham
Newcastle still have some injury concerns going into this game with Callum Wilson and Joelinton still facing late fitness tests. Wilson will be a huge blow if he doesn’t make it given his record against the Hammers.
Anthony Gordon misses the game through suspension and given his form this season is sure to be a huge miss. It wouldn’t be as big of a deal if it weren’t for the long-term injury sustained by Harvey Barnes.

That being said, Newcastle are coming off the back of an historic midweek win which saw them batter Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 so confidence will be high.
BBC pundit Chris Sutton also seems to think the midweek result will be enough to see Newcastle through when writing about his prediction saying: “My old mate Charlie Adam came on the Monday Night Club a few weeks ago, saying he wondered whether Newcastle would get a point in their Champions League group, but they have done a bit better than that already.
“Wednesday’s win over Paris St-Germain was a hell of a result and Eddie Howe‘s side are absolutely flying at the moment.

“West Ham were another team in European action on Thursday as they went to Freiburg so we will have to see how they contend with that, but this has the makings of a really good game.
“The Hammers have started the season well too and are above Newcastle in the table, and this feels like it will be close… but I am going with the team in the hottest form.”
Sutton predicts a Newcastle win
With that said, Sutton’s prediction was a 1-2 win for the Magpies and that honestly feels like a fair assessment.

Newcastle should still have enough about them to see off West Ham, especially given that goals are now coming from all over the pitch for Eddie Howe’s side.
Not long to go now before we find out if he was right.
