Chelsea’s Todd Boehly makes all the mistakes the Newcastle owners have avoided

The Newcastle United owners haven’t made many mistakes since taking over, but the same can’t be said for Todd Boehly at Chelsea.

His consortium bought out Roman Abramovich earlier this year, ending a huge period of uncertainty for the Blues.

However, Boehly’s ownership of Chelsea has got off to a rocky start and showing no signs of improvement. The US billionaire has made a catalogue of errors, and the kind of errors that people expected Amanda Staveley and co to make.

But that has not been the case, and the latest mistake at Chelsea highlights how right the Newcastle owners are getting it.

Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel after huge summer spend from Todd Boehly

News broke on Wednesday that Thomas Tuchel had been relieved of his duties. Boehly has sacked his first manager at Chelsea, despite backing him with a huge summer of spending.

They heavily invested during the transfer window. A blockbuster name in Raheem Sterling arrived, while they forked out £70million on Wesley Fofana. Marc Cucurella was another big money signing, while experienced players Kalidou Koulibaly and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined too.

In total, Chelsea spent £278.4million this summer. That’s more than any other Premier League club has spent before in a summer transfer window.

The problem is there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to their spending. Boehly appeared to be playing Football Manager, throwing money at big names. There was even talk of Cristiano Ronaldo moving to Stamford Bridge.

The money spent and the type of players arriving didn’t appear to fit a project, and they have started the new season in disjointed fashion.

Then to sack the manager is madness. Why spend all that money for the man only to get rid of him less than a week later?!

It’s amateur hour from Boehly, who could learn a thing or two from his friends at St James’ Park.

Newcastle aren’t making mistakes

In contrast, Newcastle have been very sensible. When PIF bought the club, everyone expected the Magpies to make blockbuster moves in the transfer market.

Mega names were linked each and every day, all of which would command crazy wages to play in the North East.

However, that hasn’t happened. Every signing Newcastle have made since the change of ownership has been measured and sensible.

That’s why the new recruits have done so well, and it indicates that Newcastle have a bright future on the horizon.

The big decision Staveley and co made was to sack Steve Bruce. But they decided early that they wanted a different manager, and acted accordingly.

If Boehly always wanted someone else managing Chelsea, he should have acted at the start of the summer.

When Newcastle were taken over, a lot of people expected major mistakes to be made – mistakes like the ones Chelsea are already making. Luckily for Toon fans, the consortium are proving to be very sensible.
