Callum Wilson had to make do with a place on the bench when Newcastle United took on Liverpool on Saturday, but he was sniffing out the chances from the sidelines.

Wilson was sniffing out chances against Liverpool from Newcastle bench

On his Footballer’s Football Podcast with Michael Antonio, the Newcastle talisman joked about giving Eddie Howe the old stink-eye from the sidelines.

Antonio mentioned Newcastle’s early chances in the game that weren’t converted, particularly the Miguel Almiron chance which was saved by Alisson and the great balls put across the box by Allan Saint-Maximin, saying that “You wish you were there, you were thinking I will be there, I would have sniffed that out.

The two shared a laugh with Wilson following up with, “I was on the bench sniffing them out, staring at the manager like “grrrr”. Nah I’m joking, I was frustrated not to start, but being in training only a couple of days before it was a sensible decision.”

Wilson did come off the bench in the second half, by which time Newcastle were two goals and one man down, but were still fighting and, in fairness to the lads, it did look like they could have nicked at least a goal from the game, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Finding himself through on goal after some great play by Anthony Gordon, Wilson’s effort was once again saved by Alisson, who had already made some great stops to keep Liverpool’s lead intact.

One of those games

However, Wilson believes that the missed chance was more on his shoulders than down to the Liverpool keeper’s efforts: “For me personally, in the second half with my opportunity, the one he’s saved, I would look at myself more than saying it’s a great save from him.“

It’s the fine margins that make football so great, but on Saturday, those margins all went against Newcastle, and for me, the defeat gets chalked up as “one of those games”. I don’t think any one person, or one incident shaped the game, particularly when the goals came before the sending off, I just think it was written in the stars that Newcastle weren’t to get anything from that particular match.

So with that being said, I’ll forgive Callum Wilson that miss and just hope he makes up for it on Sunday at Wembley.
