Callum Wilson and West Ham forward Michail Antonio dropped their second episode of ‘The Footballer’s Football Podcast‘ on BBC sounds. The two kicked off their second episode discussing their respective victories on the weekend.
Antonio’s West Ham defeated Chelsea 3-2 at home, whilst Wilson and the Magpies beat Burnley 1-0 in their first league win of the season.
Newcastle’s first win of the season was an important one
Firstly, Antonio began by congratulating his co-host for his 2 goals in the week and his first victory of the season. “It’s been a long time coming, the end of the game there was such relief”, Wilson replied.
Furthermore, the Newcastle man explained the importance of the win for him and the club. However, Wilson added, “it’s still something you can’t get too carried away about because we’ve still got a long way to go and take each game at a time but you have to start somewhere.”
“It’s been difficult, it has been a tough period for us, but I think as a team we’ve all stuck in there, dug deep, everyone’s stayed together, stayed positive.”
Also, Wilson offered an interesting insight into what the dressing room was like after the win. He stated, “Having won our first win of the season, you come off you end going and doing TV straight away, so you don’t get to have that first initial 5 minutes in the dressing room.”
“Everyone was relieved but no one was bouncing around and stuff like that, it was 3 games in a week, it had finished everyone off.”
“I think it was one of those of exhaustion but also happiness.”

Wilson speaks ahead of away trip to Leicester
To wrap up the second episode the duo spoke on their upcoming fixtures. The Hammers face Burnley away while Wilson and the Magpies travel to Leicester.
Wilson stated on the approaching fixture, “We had a good time there last year and we’ll be looking to emulate that again.”
“But it’s a never season, not every season is the same, not every game is the same.”
“So it’s gonna be a difficult game, no matter when you play them.”
Last season the Toon Army beat the Foxes 4-2 in May, Wilson bagged a brace in their best performance of the 2020/21 campaign.

It’s evident the win last weekend at home was a huge lift for the Newcastle squad. Having said that, they know the job is far from done and will have the pull out the stops to achieve survival. But there is no doubt it’s a big step in the right direction.
