Callum Wilson shares what rebooted his goal-scoring form this season

Callum Wilson has regained his goal-scoring touch at Newcastle United after a rough-patch in January and it’s all down to one man.

In an interview with The Mirror, Newcastle striker Callum Wilson has explained what it is that has pushed him to rediscover his golden touch after he went through a bit of a spell after the World Cup where nothing would go in for him.

Fans would talk about how Wilson didn’t seem himself, like he’d put so much into getting that World Cup spot that he was completely drained.

A nice little trip to Dubai to recharge was a good start for Wilson

Luckily a trip to Dubai was on the horizon for the team. A brief getaway for some warm-weather training and a bit of rest and relaxation to recharge the batteries and that seemed to have sparked life back into the whole Newcastle squad, especially Callum Wilson.

However, it wasn’t just the Dubai trip that lit Wilson’s fire, it was the brilliant form of Alexander Isak and the threat to his place in the starting lineup. Wilson told The Mirror: “In the summer, we will even add to the strike department the way the club is going, and with our high pressing style, you are going to need players.

“We have both elevated each other’s performance. You know if you don’t perform you won’t start. I thrive off that. Before you could say I was getting a bit complacent, now I have had a kick up the backside, time to start scoring again, which I have of late, and I am enjoying it. The challenge.”

Having Isak grabbing the goals is what really spurred on Wilson

He then went on to say: “As an individual it is a challenge. If you are guaranteed to play week in week out you are not playing for a Champions League club.

‌“Since Alex started scoring, I had a refresh in Dubai. I have started to pull my finger out, and have started scoring. We are pushing each other at the business end of the season.”

It sounds like Wilson is going nowhere this summer. He wants to be a part of the Champions League assault and that’s only right as we wouldn’t be there without him.

All the talk that he will want to leave as he’s not happy about not being first-choice can be put to bed. Of course he’s not happy being first choice, but that’s what is pushing him to be better.

Wilson is on 13 goals this season so far with Isak on 10. The race is on to finish top scorer and the game against Southampton today offers up a great opportunity to bag a couple each.
