Callum Wilson has spoken about what he expects Newcastle United to achieve this season after tasting defeat at the weekend.
In the wake of Newcastle United succumbing to a defeat at the hands of Manchester City the question was asked on the Footballer’s Football Podcast if Newcastle should adjust their targets for the season after some pundits backed them for a title challenge.
It is far too early for Newcastle to be thinking about a title challenge in terms of both this season and the PIF‘s vision, but that hasn’t stopped some pundits, particularly Stuart Pearce from suggesting there could be a cheeky title bid in the offing from Eddie Howe‘s men.
Callum Wilson isn’t listening to outside noises on Newcastle’s aims
Callum Wilson isn’t getting carried away with all that noise however, but did still outline what he believes Newcastle should be aiming for this season.
“Internally we want to improve season on season,” said Wilson.

“We got to Europe this year we’re going to get to experience that, play in that and when everyone gets a a taste of that they’re going to want more of it. You’re not going to want to go back to a Saturday – Saturday 38-game season, you’re going to want to play them European games.
“So I feel that European football this season is a must, and it’s the minimum and then beyond that let everybody do the talking and let them place you where they want to place you in the league but ultimately for us internally as a squad, as a group, keep your feet on the ground.”
Fans are starting to dream again and that can only be a good thing
It’s a stark contrast to last season where the club’s aims were very hush-hush with Wilson speaking about what is expected on his podcast a few days after Bruno Guimaraes did the same earlier in the week.

Fan hopes ride the wide gamut of “Top 8 will do” to “We’re going to win the Champions League” and every variation in between. Of course a lot of the people who say we’re going to win everything will be saying so tongue-in-cheek, but the fact that we can joke like that now and it not seem completely absurd is a sign of how much the tide has turned.
If the club is happy to get into Europe again then I will be happy with that. Reaching a goal is always cause for celebration, beating it and going further is just a bonus.
