Callum Wilson did not start for Newcastle United against Tottenham Hotspur, but he was still barking out instructions to his teammates.
While the game was effectively won by half time with Newcastle leading 5-0, Wilson had multiple messages for the players on the pitch heading into the second half.
The 31-year-old has now revealed what he said to his teammates in a conversation with Michail Antonio on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast.
Callum Wilson wanted more goals and a clean sheet
On his podcast, Wilson told Antonio what he said to his teammates as they headed down the tunnel at half time against Spurs.
“When you’re on the bench you’re not in the changing room at the same time as the manager speaks so we went down the tunnel with the lads and my message to the lads was don’t take your foot off the gas and get complacent,” he said.

“There are players on two goals who you obviously want to get hat-tricks, so I was like listen go get your hat-trick.
“For me I also wanted Nick Pope to get a clean sheet so I said, let’s get Popey a clean sheet.”
Sadly Newcastle did not follow Wilson’s instructions
Wilson had three instructions for the Newcastle players, but only one of them was executed. The Magpies did not get complacent, and went on to win the game 6-1.
However, the players on hat-tricks were unable to get their third goals of the afternoon. Regardless, it is great to hear Wilson encouraging Alexander Isak, despite the friendly competition between the two Toon strikers.

Wilson’s third instruction was to get a clean sheet for Nick Pope, but that did not happen. Harry Kane scored in the 49th minute, capitalising on a slack bit of defending from Fabian Schar.
However, that was Newcastle’s only major lapse. Spurs had one decent chance later in the game, but it was easily saved by Pope.
Regardless, Kane’s strike meant that Pope was denied a clean sheet, which will have been really frustrating. He has not kept a clean sheet since the 2-0 win over Manchester United at the start of April.
For Wilson, it is proving to be a frustrating few weeks. He is scoring goals and playing well, but can’t get into the starting XI. Yet despite this, he is still showing why he is part of the leadership group by encouraging his teammates and offering words of advice.
