Callum Wilson has opened up about the injury that kept him out of the last matchday squad when Newcastle United travelled Bournemouth.

Wilson, whose face still adorns the murals on the walls of the stands at the Vitality Stadium, missed the game after pulling up with a tight hamstring in Newcastle training, just days before the match.

Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson said: “We spoke about the game, the big build up to it, and I was so excited. Then basically in training I just felt a bit of tightness in my hamstring, as you do, when you’re working hard. We had worked hard in the previous game to that against West Ham, so you put a lot of energy into that. We trained hard, similar to how we play. So for me I don’t really take any risks any more.”

Wilson ended his goal drought against West Ham

Wilson’s injury problems are well known to the Toon Army, so it’s good to see that he’s taking charge of the situation these days and won’t be forced to play if he’s not 100%.

Since returning from World Cup duty with England, Wilson’s form dipped slightly resulting in a goal drought which only came to an end in his last outing against West Ham. In his defense, however, he had been struggling to shake off an illness which limited his game time during his barren spell.

Joe Willock’s injury and Bruno Guimaraes’ suspension could force a formation change

With the dwindling midfield numbers at the minute Eddie Howe may be forced into playing Isak and Wilson together when Liverpool come to town on Saturday, so having both strikers fighting fit is essential.

It’s a rare sight to see both names on the team sheet, even with one on the bench, but we’re yet to see the two starting a game together which is something fans have been eager to see since the Swedish international signed in the summer.

We caught a glimpse of what could be against Fulham when Wilson played a ball across the face of goal for Isak to nod in to snatch a win in the last minute.
