Callum Wilson shares what ‘disappointed’ him last season despite securing Champions League spot

Callum Wilson has reflected on last season at Newcastle United and while he did break one of Alan Shearer’s record, one personal goal escaped him.

While Newcastle managed to achieve Champions League football and Callum Wilson had his best goal-scoring season in the Premier League, but he still wasn’t statisfied.

Wilson has recently been speaking to the media (h/t The Chronicle) where he has talked about the disappointment of missing out on a personal goal last season: “Personally 18 was my highest in the Premier League. I am disappointed not to get to 20. But it gives me more hunger to try to go again next season and achieve that goal.

“Nothing changes for me, for me to get where I am, you keep working hard. You keep working hard and keep feet on the ground.”

The £20million former Bournemouth forward then went on to say how he will finally realise a childhood dream next season by playing in the Champions League.

“It is going to be unbelievable to play in the Champions League,” said Wilson. “Something you have dreamed of as a kid. So to achieve and fulfil it is fantastic. For me personally I played in the World Cup which was another dream of mine.

“But you must stay level headed. At the end of the day, there’s more hard work ahead of us. You want to play in the Champions League and affect games. We want to prove ourselves again next season.”

Wilson could find himself the talisman in a much-improved Newcastle side next season which should hopefully see him burst through that 20 goal barrier. We know he’s capable.

If it wasn’t for the distraction of the World Cup last season he probably would have achieved it then, but that World Cup seemed to sap all of his energy and it took him a while to recover.

Without that big distraction, Wilson can focus on being at his best for Newcastle and competing with Alexander Isak for that striker spot, or indeed, playing alongside him.

No Newcastle player has broke through the 20 goal barrier in a season since 2004 when Alan Shearer netted 22 times, but next season the Magpies have two players more than capable of ending that near 20-year run in Wilson and Isak.
