Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has called on fans to stick with their team as the search for a first Premier League win of the season continues.

The 29-year-old made an instant impact on his return to the side after four games out by opening the scoring with his third goal of the season against Tottenham on Sunday.

But on his 1,000 game in management, Steve Bruce’s side succumbed to a 3-2 loss to spoil the club’s big day.

The Geordies were out in full force at St James’ Park as the club celebrated the end of the Mike Ashley tenue and the start of a new era under the Saudi-backed owners.

But on the pitch it was made clear the scale of rebuild the new owners face, as the defence was once again ripped apart and Wilson cut an isolated figure for the majority of the game.

Asked after the defeat what his message to the fans was, the former Bournemouth striker told NUFC TV: “To stick with us.

“We’re building, we’re in a new era. We’re trying to get a result for the fans – ultimately the result is going to come.

“If we keep working hard for the team, for the club, then the results are going to follow. There were teams last season that didn’t have a win for almost as many games and ended up finishing fifth and sixth in the league, so it just shows it can be done.

“It’s very early days in the season, but ultimately you do need to get that first win and we’re going to be working hard on the training field day in, day out to make sure that happens.”

Callum Wilson comments wide of the mark

It’s admirable that Wilson is making comparisons with Leicester City and West Ham United who finished fifth and sixth respectively last season, but those clubs start were no way near similar to ours this time around.

After eight games last season and heading into the November international break, Brendan Rodgers’ side sat top of the Premier League with 18 points.

The Hammers were on 11 points the same amount the Magpies had after eight fixtures.

We are winless and eight points worst off this time around, so Wilson’s comments are a little baffling, but he’s clearly trying to lift the mood in the dressing room as Bruce’s tenure continues.
