Injured star Callum Wilson believes his Newcastle United teammate Allan Saint-Maximin has what it takes to go to the very top.
The England international was a guest on the Super 6 podcast with Laura Woods and Adebayo Akinfenwa, and spoke about a variety of topics including how his recovery is going, why he signed for Newcastle and his Three Lions prospects.
The 28-year-old spoke about Frenchman Saint-Maximin, when asked by Woods how impressive he is in training.
Wilson responded (44:45): “The first time I was aware of him was when I watched a game on tele and I thought ‘Who’s this dude wearing a Gucci headband in a game?’ I was thinking ‘What’s going on here’. He’d just come to the league.
“We (Bournemouth) played against Newcastle, I sat that game out so I was in the stand watching and he got three assists and I was thinking ‘Ok, that’s why he’s wearing the Gucci headband’.
“Going to meet him when I went up to Newcastle – that was probably a factor in me signing, having the opportunity to play with players like that – he’s a great trainer, always doing tricks.
“Some stuff you see and you’re like ‘Woah, this kid could go to the top’.”
Saint-Maximin is very much the player Newcastle fans are hoping will step up while Wilson is on the sidelines with his torn hamstring.
So far he’s scored two goals and made three assists for the Magpies in 15 Premier League games.
Wilson clearly taken by Saint-Maximin
Wilson is clearly a big fan of £70,000-a-week star Saint-Maximin (The Athletic).
Listening to him talk about the 23-year-old, one gets the feeling the striker really feels better when he’s in the team. He even states how he likes the winger’s ability to attract opposition defenders away from him.
The duo could potentially become deadly for Newcastle – perhaps a new man at the helm is all it would take to allow them to flourish.
