Newcastle United suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of treble-winners Manchester City last weekend but Callum Wilson still feels it shows progress.
Newcastle didn’t have much go their way at the Etihad on Saturday night against Manchester City, but managed to keep the Premier League champions to just a 1-0 victory, which is still an admirable feat despite the sting of losing a game making it hard to see at the time.
Callum Wilson was on the bench for most of the game and has now said he was frustrated watching on as his team mates couldn’t find a way through Pep Guardiola‘s side.
Callum Wilson says Newcastle weren’t at 100% against Man City
Speaking on the Footballer’s Football Podcast this week, Wilson said: “It was a difficult game, we weren’t ourselves, we weren’t 100% and when you’re not 100% against a team like City you get punished.
“I just think we were a little bit off it. It’s difficult for me to say because I was on the bench as well, but as a team as a whole we’re all part of it and I just feel we weren’t the Newcastle we can be, we weren’t the Newcastle who played against Aston Villa.

“Once you’re not that and everybody is not 100% you get exposed and ultimately that’s what happened on the day, they scored a goal of good quality and we just couldn’t unlock them.
Now the dust has settled it’s easier to see the positives
“They’re the best team in world football and only to lose one nil is a credit to us and how far we’ve come in a short space of time.”

As Wilson said at the end there, losing 1-0 can still be seen as a positive as recent trips to the Etihad have resulted in much bigger defeats, so the fact that we kept them down to one goal and actually managed to frustrate them quite a bit shows that we’re almost at their level now.
I’m not saying we’re title contenders just yet, I don’t want to get carried away, but I think we showed enough in the game to give us plenty of hope that we’re heading in the right direction.
