Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has provided an instant reaction after the takeover of the club was officially announced. A Saudi Arabian-backed consortium have taken control, ending 14 years of hell under Mike Ashley.

This has been a long time in coming for Newcastle supporters. On Thursday night they headed to St James’ Park in their droves, cracked open the cans and rejoiced as Ashley finally became a thing of the past.

Newcastle have been relegated twice on Ashley’s watch. They were promoted at the first time of asking both times but ultimately his tenure has been well short of ambition.

Rafa Benitez became a cult hero in the eyes of supporters. Replacing him with Steve Bruce has been nothing short of shocking and the manager could now follow Ashley out of the club.

Newcastle have been a shambles this season. They’ve failed to win any of their seven Premier League games and sit second bottom in the division.

Bruce now faces an anxious wait to see what the new board will decide to do. It does seem highly likely that a new manager will be sought, however.

What has Wilson said about the Newcastle takeover?

Wilson is arguably Bruce’s best signing since he took over. He signed from Bournemouth for £20 million in the summer of August 2020.

In 31 games he has scored 14 goals, although he has often struggled to stay fit during his time in the North East.

Wilson has a decent pedigree at Premier League level and he will surely thrive under a new manager.

Bruce has often stifled his attacking quality and any new incumbent will need to work out how to create more chances for the likes of Wilson.

He certainly seems impressed. In the aftermath of the takeover being completed, he has taken to Twitter to speak of his delight.
