Callum Wilson was Johnny-on-the-spot for Newcastle United on Saturday, despite Joel Robles’ best attempts to put him off.
Newcastle drew 2-2 with Leeds at the weekend, with Wilson scoring a brace to take his tally to 17 Premier League goals.
Both of his goals came from the penalty spot, with the 31-year-old given the tricky task of stepping up to take two spot kicks in the same game.
Penalties are becoming more and more psychological, and that only intensifies when the same player has to take more than one in the same game.
Wilson had that responsibility at Elland Road, but he rose to the occasion. His first was slotted into the bottom left corner, while his second went straight down the middle.

The Newcastle number nine did very well – especially considering the fact that the Leeds keeper was doing all he could to put him off for penalty number two.
Callum Wilson was not fazed by Joel Robles’ actions
Speaking on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast, Wilson admitted that he didn’t even realise at the time that Robles was trying to put him off.
“I didn’t actually see what he was doing until I watched the penalties back on the replay after the game,” he said.
“You’re fully zoned out, focussed. You have to be because it’s a big moment, second one of the game.
There’s a lot of mind games going on in terms of him trying to guess where I’m going, trying to get in my head, put me off with it being second penalty and all that. I will always pick two spots before a game anyway.”

Ice cool composure from Newcastle’s number nine
Robles really was doing all he could to get in Wilson’s head, with referee Simon Hooper even telling him off before blowing his whistle.
But the Toon striker was unmoved, and scored his second goal of the afternoon. There was no acknowledgement of Robles in his celebration, as he ran off towards the travelling Toon Army.
Now we know that Wilson wasn’t even aware of what Robles was trying to do, so that probably explains why he didn’t even look at him as he ran off to celebrate. If he had known what the Spaniard was doing, you just know Wilson would have had a cheeky word after hitting the back of the net.
But the top scorer was cool and composed when it matters, proving that Newcastle fans can rely on him in these pivotal end-of-season moments.
