Callum Wilson has only scored once for England, but the Newcastle striker will hope to do it again at the World Cup.

The 30-year-old is part of the Three Lions’ 26-man squad going to Qatar, having been named in Gareth Southgate’s team last week.

The last time Wilson played for his country was three years ago, and he now has the chance to add to his tally of four caps. A fifth cap will be even more special than the ones before, as it could come at the World Cup. It’s the biggest tournament in football, and Wilson is on his way there.

His form for Newcastle has been exceptional, scoring six goals in 11 Premier League appearances. It earned him a place on the plane, beating the likes of Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham.

There have been plenty of special moments in Wilson’s career, but going to the World Cup has to be up there for him. And the Toon number has now revealed his best ever moment during his time as a professional footballer.

Scoring for England was the ‘pinnacle’ for Wilson

Ahead of flying to Qatar, Wilson spoke to England’s official media team. He admitted that scoring for England is the best moment of his career so far.

“Life’s all about timing,” he said.

“I’ve had three years away. The pinnacle of my career was probably scoring on my debut for England. It was a moment that I’ll never forget, but also a moment that I want to add to.

“Now going to a World Cup, there’s great opportunities there in front of us as players to go and make history. I think for us that’s the drive and the motivation.”

Special season for Wilson

The moment Wilson is talking about is exactly four years ago today (November 15th). On that day in 2018, he scored his one and only England goal in a win over USA, on what was his international debut.

Four years later and he’s back in the England fold and going to the World Cup – where ironically they will be playing USA again.

Wilson will be desperate to get some minutes and show what he can do, although it will be difficult with Harry Kane in front of him.

If he does score at the World Cup, it could become Wilson’s new top moment, during a season that has the potential to be very special.

His form has earned international recognition, and it has helped Newcastle into third in the Premier League. The Magpies could feasibly qualify for Europe next season, which would be another huge milestone for Wilson.

But for now, all his attention will be on the World Cup with England. Good luck Callum!
