Newcastle United were electric on Wednesday night.
It was one of Newcastle’s most complete performances of the season with the Magpies beating Brentford to reach a second Carabao Cup semi-final in three seasons.
A Sandro Tonali brace and Fabian Schar strike ensured the Magpies would be in Thursday’s League Cup semi-final draw with Liverpool and Arsenal confirmed as potential opponents.
The win meant the momentum from Newcastle’s win against Leicester was used to their advantage with a packed-out St James’ Park crowd in fine voice under the floodlights.
Players took to social media to celebrate the win including an Instagram post from Bruno Guimaraes but it was his words elsewhere that showed the extent of his captaincy.

Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes comments on Fabian Schar’s social media post
Schar took to Instagram following his goal in the win against Brentford.
The Swiss defender said: “SEMI’S! Let’s go @NUFC”
Schar scored Newcastle’s third goal of the evening thanks to an unselfish Guimaraes who squared the ball to him for an easy finish from close range.
Commenting on Schar’s Instagram post, the Brazilian said: “What a player”.
Guimaraes also commented on Tonali’s post with the same three words. He became club captain at the beginning of the season but his influence on the squad goes well beyond what fans see on the pitch.
Newcastle will be without both Schar and Guimaraes for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final after they picked up their second bookings of the competition in the win against Brentford so their influence needs to be reflected in the stands instead.
Like Newcastle players and fans, Brentford boss Thomas Frank wants Newcastle to win the Carabao Cup and believes Eddie Howe can end Newcastle’s trophy drought.
Former owner Merhdad Ghodoussi comments on Newcastle’s win
Merhdad Ghodoussi was one of the key faces in Newcastle’s historic takeover in October 2021. Alongside wife Amanda Staveley, they attended many of the Magpies games before they left the club in July.
The win on Wednesday saw the former owner comment on Schar, Tonali and Guimaraes’ Instagram posts.
On Schar’s post, he sent two flame emojis and a heart to Guimaraes. On Tonali’s post, he commented “Bravo maestro”.
Ghodoussi was spotted at Tottenham Hotspur’s stadium in October as football fans await his and Staveley’s next move in the footballing world.
It comes as no shock that Staveley and Ghodoussi were sad to leave Newcastle but their support for the club remains even if they aren’t always there.
