Bruno Guimaraes has spoken about what Newcastle United captain, Kieran Trippier did after he was sent off against Southampton in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg.
Trippier put his arm around Bruno after his red card against Southampton
Brazilian international Bruno has been speaking to NUFC TV ahead of Sunday’s trip to Wembley and talked about his red card, how he felt afterwards and what Kieran Trippier did for him.
With all the talk lately being around Nick Pope’s sending off against Liverpool on Saturday and his resultant suspension meaning he will miss the Carabao Cup final, it’s easy to forget that Newcastle will be welcoming back a big name on Sunday after a three-game suspension.
Bruno Guimaraes, who has been a monumental figure in Newcastle’s rise to the upper echelons of the Premier League this season as well as being instrumental in getting Newcastle to Sunday’s Carabao Cup final, has missed the last three Premier League matches after receiving a straight-red card against Southampton in the League Cup semi-final.
The fact that Newcastle had three Premier League games between the second leg and the final was a stroke of luck, allowing Bruno to make his return for the big game, a fate unfortunately not afforded to Nick Pope.
Talking about his red card, Bruno was reminded that Kieran Trippier put his arm around him as he walked off: “It’s what the captain needs to do to the players.
“After he did it, I said thank you for looking after me, it was important because when you get a red card you think you have let the team down and it was in that moment that we needed me, because it was in the final minutes of the game.
“But Tripps did something nice to see, so big credit to him.”
Bruno can write himself into the Newcastle history books
Since Trippier signed for Newcastle last January for £12m from Atletico Madrid he has proven himself to be a fantastic leader both on and off the pitch. Even after he picked up his metatarsal injury a month into his Newcastle career, he still showed up for all the games on his crutches so he could support the team.
Bruno has often spoken about wanting to make himself a legend at Newcastle and while many fans, myself included, would say he already has, he has the chance to write himself into the history books on Sunday, and after feeling like he let the side down when he was dismissed against Southampton, I’ll be willing to bet he will come out feeling he has a point to prove on Sunday.
We can’t rely on one man, it is a team game after all, but Bruno really can be the key for us against Manchester United at Wembley.
