This weekend saw a wide range of players linked with a move to Newcastle United, including Ben Gibson and Ben Davies.

TEAMtalk claim that Steve Bruce is ready to offer Gibson a Premier League lifeline after struggling at Burnley, while the Sun believe Preston centre-back Davies is a target.

These are two players that Newcastle absolutely do not need.

If we’ve got a limited transfer kitty, we don’t need to wasting any money on players we don’t need. And at centre-back, we’re actually blessed with some great options.

Last season, the trio of Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar and Florian Lejeune formed a brilliant understand, which was only ended by injury to the latter.

Whether Bruce plays with two or three centre-backs, he already has enough talent at his disposal. On top of those three, Federico Fernandez and Ciaran Clark provide adequate backup, while Paul Dummett is also able to operate at centre-back.

Bruce might want to put his own stamp on the side with his own players, but he needs to see the quality he already has. Schar was a revelation last season. Lejeune has barely put a foot wrong since arriving in 2017. Lascelles is our captain and leader.

The squad needs a lot of additions, but centre-back is arguably where we’re at our strongest. Neither Gibson or Davies would be an improvement on what we already have.
