Brighton loss gives Newcastle extra motivation for Everton clash – opinion

Newcastle United will have extra motivation for tonight’s clash against Everton. Brighton & Hove Albion lost 2-0 last night to Tottenham Hotspur, thanks to goals from Cristian Romero and Harry Kane.

A win tonight would mean that the Magpies would move above the Seagulls in the league. That would mean the Toon would move up to 12th place and a point ahead of Brighton and Leicester.

They’re already in strong form, only losing one Premier League match in 2022 so far. The 1-0 defeat last weekend will still give them plenty of confidence – the Magpies were lucky not to get at least a point from the game.

Everton have struggled to turn their form around since they last played Newcastle

Last month the Magpies won 3-1 at home against Everton. A Mason Holgate own goal, Ryan Fraser’s tap in and Kieran Trippier’s free-kick gave them all three points.

The Toffees have only won one match since then, beating Leeds 3-0 at Goodison. They’ve lost every other game, including a 5-0 hammering away at Spurs.

Newcastle will want to replicate a similar result and performance to the last time they faced each other. They will be without Trippier this time around, but Eddie Howe has utilised his fringe players very well.

Additionally, plenty of Toon players are in fine form despite injuries. Fraser has looked a real force on the wing and new boys Bruno Guimaraes and Chris Wood will be full of confidence after netting their first goals against Southampton last week.

This calendar year the Magpies have pushed themselves away from the relegation zone. They’re nine points clear of the drop zone and will look to focus on making a push for the top 10. The Toon are looking up, not down.

Howe and the players deserve high praise for the turnaround. There’s been a sense of belief instilled into the club and they look like they believe they can beat anyone.
