Boulaye Dia has opened up about his immediate future, following recent links to Newcastle United.
The Reims striker has been in superb form this season, scoring 12 goals in Ligue 1 in 17 games.
That haul puts him level in the scoring charts with Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe.
Dia has been crucial for Reims, who would be fighting relegation if now for his goals.
His explosive start has led to speculation that he could be targeted this month, and it was reported in November (Chronicle) that Newcastle were on his tail.
But it appears the Magpies may have some difficulty prising him away from Reims judging by his latest comments.
He said (Ligue 1 official): “I can leave, just as well as I can stay!
“This is just the beginning of the transfer window; the month is very long. I don’t think about that. I’m focused on the results of the team, on myself, to continue to perform well and to score goals.
“I feel good in Reims, it’s a good family atmosphere here. Otherwise, we know my situation. I have a release clause, that’s what I can tell you.”
Dia move seems unlikely
It seems Dia jumping ship mid-season is unlikely.
Clearly the player is happy enough where he is right now scoring important goals for Reims, and Newcastle likely don’t have the money to trigger the player’s release clause.
The notion of Reims loaning out their star man is madness, and so Newcastle would surely be best served forgetting about Dia for now.
