Eddie Howe’s Newcastle is taking shape, and Sven Botman has provided a behind the scenes insight into the manager’s ‘vision’ for the club.

The defender only joined the Magpies this summer, but quickly understood what the manager wants from his players.

In an interview with BBC’s MOTDx, Botman admitted that he spoke to Howe on Zoom before deciding to join Newcastle, and has provided details on how the manager is in training.

Botman on Howe’s Newcastle ‘vision’

The 22-year-old was asked about his first conversation with Howe, and how he convinced the Dutchman to leave Lille and head to St James’ Park.

“He has a really clear vision about what he wants,” he said.

“I’ll give you an example – one of my first training sessions, somebody shot from 30 metres from the goal and he said like ‘no no, we’re not going to do this anymore, it’s now play, play, play’.

“That’s the vision he has.”

Botman is perfectly suited to Howe’s style

It’s interesting to hear that Howe is trying to clamp down on speculative shots from distance at Newcastle. It explains why he wasn’t initially happy with Fabian Schar against Nottingham Forest before his effort thundered into the top corner.

Howe’s insistence on keeping the ball means Toon fans can expect less 30-yard screamers – not that they were a regular occurrence in black and white.

But from watching Newcastle this season, it’s clear that the players are taking note of Howe’s vision. They are constantly recycling the ball in and around the area, rather than taking pot shots at goal.

However, there have been some instances where impatience has got the better of the Newcastle players. That was evident against Bournemouth when we couldn’t find a way through the Cherries’ defence.

Given Howe’s desire to keep possession and create better openings, it’s clear why he wanted Botman to join the club. The £35million man is a brilliant passer of the ball, and can create opportunities from deep. His sharp passing into midfield will become a valuable asset once he is fully acclimatised to life in the Premier League.

Howe’s Newcastle is taking shape after almost a year in charge, and it is taking the club in the right direction.
