Jonjo Shelvey has been one of many players that Eddie Howe has transformed at Newcastle United. In a midfield three. Aalongside Joelinton and Joe Willock, they’ve been a strong component for the team.

Former LIverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy had praise for Shelvey on talkSPORT, highlighting that it’s the best we’ve seen from him in a long time.

Murphy said: “He’s evolved Joelinton in that midfield role, he’s left Shelvey in who has been playing out of his skin, better than he’s played in a long time, even though he spent god knows how much on Guimaraes. He’s given Shelvey that responsibility and left him in there when he could’ve dragged him out.”

With reports of a new deal, Shelvey has won some fans over under Howe

Before Howe’s arrival, some Toon fans would’ve been more than okay with Shelvey leaving the club. But the performances we’ve seen from him recently has reminded many of just how good he can be.

A report from The Telegraph has reported that both he and Fabian Schar are set for new deals. It’s definitely deserved, Shelvey deserves a lot of credit for his turnaround and proven many wrong.

What’s makes his performances even more impressive is that the form of the midfield three has kept out new boy Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian arrived from Lyon for a fee of £40 million (Sky Sports) and is highly touted as an exciting prospect. With all the hype around him, it shows how well Shelvey has done to keep his space in the starting XI.

For Howe, it will come as no surprise that the 30-year-old – a £12 million signing from Swansea City in January 2016 (BBC Sport) – is showcasing his talents. When he first arrived he spoke highly of Shelvey.

The statement raised a few eyebrows, but Howe has been proven he was right. Another who was highlighted by the boss was Joelinton. Clearly, he knows where the talent is and how to get the very best out of it.

While Newcastle may bring new midfielders this summer if they survive. Shelvey could well prove to be a valuable option for the Magpies. Who knows he may be able to remain in the starting XI beyond the summer.
