Longstaff’s rise has been somewhat fortunate given Newcastle’s injury woes last month, but he has seized his chance. Things got even better on Tuesday night when he scored his first Premier League goal in the 2-0 win over Burnley.

However, he has stiff competition to win Player of the Month. He has been nominated alongside megastars Paul Pogba, Sergio Aguero, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk. The other three nominees are Ashley Barnes, Luke Shaw and Wilfried Zaha.

Benitez believes Longstaff deserves to win

“You have to give him [Longstaff] credit, not just for playing well, but the way he is handling the situation,” Benitez told the Chronicle.

“Hopefully he wins the award.

“I think he has to win it because when you compare him with the other players this is just a young lad.”

While Benitez’s comments are far, it’ll be quite something if Longstaff wins the February award.

Considering Aguero scored two hat-tricks in that period, the competition is pretty strong. But the fact that Newcastle’s breakout star is even in the conversation is testament to his rapid rise.

To think, he only made his Premier League debut on Boxing Day…
