Ben Foster was very impressed by what £13m Newcastle player did against Everton despite Sean Dyche complaint

There were not many standout performers for Newcastle United against Everton on Saturday night.

The Magpies were held to a 0-0 draw at Goodison Park, with Anthony Gordon passing up Newcastle’s best chance.

Gordon missed a first half penalty after Sandro Tonali was fouled in the box, with Jordan Pickford saving his effort from 12 yards.

Away from that miss, Gordon had a pretty good game. He was the most dangerous player in a Newcastle United shirt, but was unable to find the net against his former club.

Joelinton also played pretty well against Everton, while Miguel Almiron had a positive impact off the bench. And, as has been the case all season, Newcastle were able to rely on Nick Pope when the England international was called upon.

Dan Burn involved in controversial incident

One of Newcastle’s best moments came courtesy of Dan Burn, although Everton fans will argue that it was one of the game’s most controversial moments.

The £13million defender did enough to stop Dominic Calvert-Lewin from scoring in the second half, after his initial effort was saved by Pope.

Calvert-Lewin looked to score the rebound, only for Burn to get in front of him. Everton’s number nine went to ground and appealed for a penalty, but nothing was given. VAR ruled that Calvert-Lewin had kicked Burn, rather than the Newcastle centre-back impeding him. Former referee Dermot Gallagher shared that view, admitting that a penalty was correctly not given.

Ben Foster praises Newcastle United defender

Now Ben Foster has given his verdict on the incident on The Football Fill-In on his YouTube channel, and he has praised Burn for his role in denying Calvert-Lewin.

“At first glance, I’m thinking I need to see it a little bit slowed down,” he said.

“Then we do see it, it’s obvious. Burn has done really well to get in front of him. Once you get your body in front of him or your leg, it’s going to go in your favour.

“I agree, I don’t think it was a penalty.”

Sean Dyche was not happy about Dan Burn challenge

Unsurprisingly, Everton manager Sean Dyche was not happy about the decision not to award his team a penalty.

“Everyone knows our record of not getting penalties and we haven’t got one again so we are left frustrated by that,” he told Sky Sports.

“He’s trying to finish it. The ball is there to be finished and he’s trying to finish it and there player interrupts the ball.

“Let’s put it this way – an easy way for people who want to listen – if that’s in the middle of the pitch do you think it’s given as a foul? Because I think everyone would say absolutely, 100 per cent but we can’t get penalties – we know that. We hope we do moving forwards.

“They didn’t have a look at it which is frustrating. You go over to the little screen, I don’t know why and everyone knows what’s going to happen – you give it for them and he did.

“It was a penalty though because you can’t do that in the box.”

Dan Burn continues his strong start to the season for Newcastle United

While those of an Everton persuasion believe they should have been awarded a penalty, most will agree that it was the correct decision from Craig Pawson to wave play on.

Burn was extremely clever, ensuring he got his body in between man and ball. That resulted in Calvert-Lewin kicking him, rather than the ball.

It was a smart bit of defending, as Burn continues to enjoy a strong start to the season.

The 32-year-old has started all of Newcastle’s Premier League games so far, playing at centre-back rather than left-back. He looks much more comfortable in the middle of defence, after enduring some tough moments during the previous campaign.

But Burn is currently one of Newcastle’s most consistent performers, and continued his good run of form at Goodison Park. He stopped a certain goal from Calvert-Lewin, one week after keeping Erling Haaland quiet during Newcastle’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
