Ben Foster compares Nick Pope to Liverpool superstar

Nick Pope has been one of the Premier League’s best goalkeepers this season, and he is now being recognised among the league’s elite.

Newcastle would not be where they are right now without Pope, who has proven to be an absolute bargain signing.

The £10million man has been sensational, boasting 13 clean sheets so far this season. That tally is only bettered by David De Gea, who has 14.

But Pope’s efforts have contributed to Newcastle having the best defensive record in the Premier League, and he is now being compared to one of the best keepers in the world.

Ben Foster thinks Nick Pope is similar to Alisson Becker

Pope has appeared on Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast, where he discussed his admiration for Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Foster then intervened, admitting that he thinks Pope and the Brazilian number one have similar qualities.

“I think he’s got a few similarities to you [Pope], to be honest,” he said.

“He’s so bold and brave. He doesn’t think about the consequences. You can see he doesn’t care about the consequences. It is what it is. He’s coming for it so deal with it and that’s it, we’ll think about it afterwards.”

Alisson is the Premier League’s best right now

That is incredibly high praise from Foster, as Alisson is one of the best goalkeepers in the world today.

While Liverpool have been really poor this season, they would be doing even worse if it was not for the £67million man. He has been immense between the sticks – and he has had to be due to Liverpool’s faltering defence.

His speed off his line is sensational, nullifying attack after attack with his positioning. That is something Pope is trying to emulate. The 31-year-old is very commanding, and often comes rushing out to sweep up attacks.

It is a great asset – until it goes wrong like it did on the eve of the Carabao Cup final…

But Alisson and Pope are two commanding goalkeepers, and it is what makes them so special. It is very nice of Foster to draw those comparisons, and it means more coming from him given that he is also a keeper.

Newcastle struck gold when they got Pope, signing a stopper who is similar in style to someone who cost almost £70million, but getting him for a fraction of the price.
