According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are weighing up a move for Newcastle forward Dwight Gayle.

The newly promoted side will need a striker ahead of next season, with Tammy Abraham set to return to Chelsea. And Gayle is reportedly a target for Dean Smith’s side, as well as Brentford ace Neal Maupay.

Smith will know Maupay well from his days as Brentford boss, but their interest in Gayle is a lot more intriguing. Considering he spent the past season on loan at West Brom, a permanent move to Villa would cause quite a stir.

West Brom played their hand early in the window, stating that they can’t afford to sign Gayle due to his ‘Premier League contract’.

But with Aston Villa now back in the top flight, they will have the funds to be able to bring in the Newcastle forward. The Evening Standard previously reported that Newcastle want £20million for Gayle, which seems over the top.

However, after scoring 24 goals last season, Newcastle can surely make a profit on the man they paid £10million for three years ago.

Aston Villa fans, still on a massive high after their day at Wembley, have reacted to the news that Gayle is reportedly a target following promotion. It appears as though it has brought them crashing back down to earth…
