Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin came in for high praise on Match of the Day 2 last night from Ashley Williams.

The star enjoyed a really good first outing yesterday against West Ham United.

Newcastle were beaten 4-2 at St. James’ Park.

But the Frenchman was a bright spark as is usually the case whether Newcastle win, lose or draw.

It was his brilliance that allowed the Magpies to take the lead early doors through Callum Wilson.

Unfortunately, he went quiet as the Hammers took the lead in the game, but Williams was left thoroughly impressed.

Speaking as a pundit on MOTD2, he said: “He had a really good game.

“If you’re a Newcastle fan, OK you lost the game, but the performance was good and some individual performances were very good.

“I think Saint-Maximin is probably integral to anything that’s going to happen for Newcastle.

“Here we see him winning the ball back on his own goal line and he carries it, he can ghost past players, he’s a livewire, at any point he can change the game.”

Williams won’t be the last to praise ASM

Saint-Maximin was tremendous for Newcastle yesterday for about an hour of the game.

The penalty decision, which lead to West Ham taking the lead in the game, appeared to flatten the hosts and dampen the 24-year-old.

But considering he didn’t feature much in pre-season, it was a very encouraging display from him.

He is truly mesmerising at times, and one gets the feeling plaudits will once again be plentiful for him this season.
