Anthony Gordon names his toughest ever opponent, and it is not Kyle Walker

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is a match for any right-back in world football.

With his speed, balance and ability to go both ways, Anthony Gordon will fancy his chances against any defender he faces.

The Newcastle United player has been tested up against the best, particularly during his Toon career. Kyle Walker has praised Gordon for having a go and running at him, while he has faced Achraf Hakimi in the Champions League.

But who is the most difficult right-back that Gordon has had to face?

Anthony Gordon names the best right-back he has faced

The answer has been given during a video on England’s YouTube channel.

Curtis Jones was asked to guess who Gordon thinks his toughest right-back opponent is between Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker and Achraf Hakimi.

The Liverpool midfielder went with Walker, but his answer was incorrect.

“Hakimi,” Gordon said.

“Honestly, PSG away was one of the toughest games I’ve ever played.

“At home, I can say I played well. Away, I was okay in the game, I played well. But he was top.

“They’ve all got their own qualities. Trent is good on the ball. Walker is so fast and strong. Hakimi on the ball.

“Trent going forward. Walker going back. Hakimi is a mix of both.”

Hakimi was exceptional for PSG against Newcastle United

Newcastle United did very well against PSG last season. They beat them 4-1 at St James’ Park, which was arguably the Magpies’ greatest ever win – until the Carabao Cup final victory over Liverpool.

As Gordon says, he played well that night, and he certainly had to up against Hakimi.

The return fixture was much more challenging, with an injury-ridden Toon side asked to do a lot of defending in the French capital. Unfortunately, that game is best remembered for the Tino Livramento handball decision that robbed Newcastle of a famous 1-0 win.

But Hakimi showed his class in both games, which is why Gordon ranks him above Walker and Alexander-Arnold.

When you consider the other two players, Gordon has always done very well up against Alexander-Arnold. Whenever they have faced off, the Newcastle United star has easily got the better of his fellow Scouser.

We have also seen Gordon cause Walker real problems, which is not something that a lot of wingers have done over the years.

It remains to be seen when Gordon will get another chance to face his toughest opponent Hakimi. It could happen next season if Newcastle qualify for the Champions League and are handed a rematch with Paris Saint-Germain.
