The last thing Newcastle United need right now is to play against Premier League leaders Liverpool.
While Newcastle could only draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend, Liverpool strengthened their title credentials.
They beat Manchester City 2-0 at Anfield, just days after they triumphed over Real Madrid by the same scoreline.
Arne Slot’s side are on fire right now, as they prepare to head to St James’ Park on Wednesday night.
Newcastle’s performances are concerning, so fans will not be relishing the chance to take on a Liverpool side that look unstoppable right now.
Andy Robertson ready for ‘massive’ Newcastle vs Liverpool game

And despite major games against Real Madrid and Manchester City, Andy Robertson has already admitted that Liverpool will not be taking Newcastle United lightly due to recent matches they have had at St James’ Park.
Following Liverpool’s win over Man City, Robertson spoke to Stadium Astro. He was asked about their lead at the top of the table, but the Scotland international is only focussed on their next fixture.
“It’s 100% game by game,” he said.
“It’s December. It’s far too early. It feels as if we’ve got a game tomorrow, that’s how busy this period is.
“We’ve been through Real Madrid. We’ve been through Man City. But there’s another massive game away to Newcastle on Wednesday. A place that’s never easy, a place that we always have tight games.
“It’s pointless winning those games if you cannot go back it up. We have to keep going game by game, that’s all we can focus on.”
Robertson is right about recent Newcastle vs Liverpool games
Since Eddie Howe became Newcastle United manager, he is yet to beat Liverpool. In fact, his side have been on the end of a few drubbings at Anfield.
However, it has been a different story at St James’ Park.
Howe’s Newcastle side have played against Liverpool at St James’ Park on three occasions, with the Reds winning all three games. However, they have all been tight affairs, as Robertson alluded to.

Naby Keita scored the only goal in 2022, as Jurgen Klopp’s side continued to challenge for the Premier League title with a gritty 1-0 away win at the business end of the season. Newcastle played alright against Liverpool on that day, but there was a clear gulf.
The following year’s fixture at St James’ Park was defined by Nick Pope’s red card that resulted in him being suspended for the Carabao Cup final. Even though Newcastle lost by two goals, they created a lot of opportunities despite going down to 10 men.
Last season, Newcastle should have beaten Liverpool at St James’ Park. They were 1-0 up against 10 men going into the final 10 minutes, yet a Darwin Nunez brace stole three points away from the Magpies.
Newcastle’s record against Liverpool is shocking, but recent home games have been close. That can give Howe some reason for optimism, despite his side’s recent struggles.
