Amanda Staveley has admitted that the European Super League would have impacted the valuation of Premier League clubs, such as Newcastle United.

The European Super League was launched last month, but collapsed days later.

The ‘big six’ of English football were involved, along with Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan and Inter.

Nine of the 12 clubs withdrew, leaving the plan in tatters.

The backlash has continued, with big protests at Arsenal and Manchester United against their respective owners.

The ESL would have been terrible for football, and highlighted the greed of Europe’s elite clubs.

While the ESL clubs would have benefitted financially, it would seriously have hindered everyone else, including Newcastle.

In a Q&A blog with Bloomberg about the future of European football, Staveley discussed how the ESL would have damaged clubs.

She claimed that the project would have ‘damaged the entire game’ and impacted every club ‘financially and reputationally’.

Staveley also claimed that the valuation of Premier League clubs would have crashed.

This comes a year after PCP Capital Partners agreed a £305million deal to buy Newcastle.

Staveley was set to own 10% of the club, with 10% going to the Reuben brothers and the other 80% going to the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.

However, the deal collapsed when PIF withdrew in July. This was because of the Premier League’s inability to conclude their Owners’ and Directors’ test.

The saga continues though, as Mike Ashley has launched two legal battles against the Premier League.

During the Q&A blog, Staveley declined to comment on the Newcastle takeover.

It’s likely that we won’t hear from Staveley or anyone close to the takeover until Ashley’s legal battles have been concluded.

While Staveley didn’t say anything directly about the Newcastle takeover, her comments about clubs’ valuation are of interest.

Would the ESL project have forced the consortium to renegotiate terms? Or would they have totally distanced themselves from buying Newcastle?

Fortunately, the European Super League won’t be going ahead anytime soon. But only time will tell if Staveley and co are allowed to complete a takeover.
