Buying Newcastle United wasn’t simple for Amanda Staveley.
It was a four year journey that finally reached a conclusion on October 7th 2021.
Despite all the speculation surrounding the Saudi-backed deal, the takeover came out of the blue last month.
The Premier League finally approved the sale, and allowed Staveley, Jamie Reuben and PIF to take control of Newcastle United.

It’s the beginning of a new era at St James’ Park, and one of the big improvements at the club is communication.
That has continued this week, with Staveley speaking to the club website following the appointment of Eddie Howe.
And the Toon director has admitted that they’ve taken a risk buying Newcastle right now.
What has Amanda Staveley said?
“It would have been an easy decision for us not to buy the club just yet, wait until probably post Christmas, post the January window, see where the club sat in the league and then made the acquisition,” Staveley said.

“That would have been the safe investment bet. But we didn’t do that. We decided if we get didn’t it now it wasn’t going to happen.
“We had to take that risk, and we felt we took a risk because the club was sitting in 19th position at the time.”
Buying Newcastle will be a risk worth taking
The risk is massive. The consortium will be hugely embarrassed if their acquisition ends up in the second tier of English football.
But it is a risk worth taking. If they had waited until the new year, it wouldn’t have reflected well on them.

The deal was first agreed in April last year. Since then, fans have waited patiently for it to be completed. They’ve been through it all, reading about geo-political battles between Qatar and Saudi Arabia and witnessing court cases between the club and the Premier League.
The consortium owed it to the fans who continued to support the deal to come in as soon as possible.
And while they’ve taken a risk with the timing, any deal of that magnitude is a risk. And it’ll be a risk worth taking if new boss Eddie Howe hits the ground running at St James’ Park.
