Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson has been called up to the senior Scotland squad for the first time.
Scotland manager Steve Clarke has included Newcastle United ace Elliot Anderson in his squad to take on Cyprus and England in the upcoming international break.
Anderson has chosen to represent Scotland over England. The 20-year-old was born in Whitley Bay, and represented England up until under-19 level. He then joined the Scotland set up at under-21 level, and is eligible to represent the Scottish national side as his grandmother was born in Glasgow.
This is great news for the Tartan Army, as Anderson is a supremely gifted young player. He is very highly rated at Newcastle, having been at St James’ Park since the age of eight. Eddie Howe thinks a great deal of Anderson, having previously stated that he has “got extraordinary talent.”
Anderson broke into the Magpies’ first team last season, racking up 27 appearances in all competitions, 22 of which came in the Premier League. He has also been introduced from the bench in each of Newcastle’s three Premier League outings so far this season.
If he is able to make his senior international debut against Cyprus or England in the coming weeks then that will mark another brilliant milestone for a young player who looks to be seriously on the rise.

Ally McCoist celebrates Anderson choosing Scotland
Scotland legend Ally McCoist is delighted that Anderson has opted to represent Scotland.
Speaking on TalkSport, the man who scored 19 goals in 61 Scotland appearances, said, “promising Newcastle midfielder, Elliot Anderson, has chosen Scotland over England…I’m a little bit surprised there’s surprise in that…it’s an attractive proposition now, playing for Scotland.”
Scotland are certainly in great form. Clarke’s side have won their last four matches in a row, in a run that has included wins against Norway and Spain. Anderson is stepping into the national team set up at a time when the mood and confidence is high, which ought to help the £12,000-a-week Newcastle ace settle in and get comfortable quickly.
