Ally McCoist can’t believe the ‘nonsense’ he’s been hearing about Eddie Howe and Newcastle

Ally McCoist simply can’t believe what is now being said about Eddie Howe’s position at Newcastle United after their defeat to Chelsea.

Some have been claiming that Newcastle need to replace Howe very soon as he’s holding this team back who they think could be doing much better in the Premier League.

However, speaking on talkSPORT, McCoist claimed that this was all ‘nonsense’ and that Newcastle currently is a work in progress, adding that Howe deserves to be given time.

McCoist wants Howe to stay at Newcastle

Howe has had a very difficult job this season and it was always going to be extremely hard to emulate last year’s success, but all of the injuries have made that virtually impossible.

It’s fair to say that most would agree Newcastle overachieved last season with the players that they’ve got, and yet they’re also claiming that Howe isn’t doing a good enough job right now.

Perhaps they could have and should have picked up a few more positive results along the way, but ultimately Howe’s hands have been tied a lot of the time with most of his starting players suffering a spell out at some point this season.

He’s still missing about half of his team now with the likes of Anthony Gordon, Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier, Joelinton and Sandro Tonali all out, so it only seems fair that he’s given a chance to actually compete next season with his full team.

On Howe, McCoist said: “He’s got to be given time surely. I’ve said all along Newcastle are a work in progress. They take two steps forward, one back, two forward, maybe a couple back. Surely it’s a lot of nonsense talking about his job, surely.”

Newcastle are still completely behind their manager

In an age where football clubs constantly chop and change managers until one finally sticks, it’s good to see that Newcastle are putting faith in the man who got them Champions League last season.

They completely understand that the circumstances as the club have been difficult, especially with not being to sign any reinforcements in January, so they’re willing to give him time.

Whether that simply means until the start of next season or if it is beyond that is not clear, but right now Howe has the backing of the board regardless of if they finish in a European place or not.

Plans have already started for the summer transfer window which will be a hugely important period for Howe to get his players back to full fitness and bring in some fresh faces to help Newcastle push on next year.
