Allan Saint-Maximin has sent a message to Newcastle United fans following his performance against Southampton yesterday.
The Frenchman was on the scoresheet at St. James’ Park, striking in the 91st minute to put Newcastle 2-1 up.
He and many others thought that would be enough for the three points.
But a challenge from Jamaal Lascelles on Adam Armstrong resulted in a penalty kick for the Saints right at the death.
James Ward-Prowse made no mistake, and the Magpies had to accept a point rather than all three.
Saint-Maximin was once again the bright spark for Newcastle.
He was his typical threatening self, and sought to drive at Southampton whenever he could.
It was a shame his performance did not end with him being the match-winner, as it would have been no less than he deserved.
The player today sent a nine-word message to the Newcastle fans that adore him.
He tweeted: “We play football to live these kind of moments.”
The picture he has uploaded is of him celebrating his goal as he is mobbed by ecstatic Toon fans.
Saint-Maximin feels the love of the fans, but…
Clearly Saint-Maximin loves the love and appreciation of the Newcastle fans.
And needless to say, the supporters absolutely idolise him. The support for him has been unwavering since the day he walked through the door.
One does question if that is going to be enough to keep him at the club long-term though.
Some fans will not be feeling too confident about Saint-Maximin staying at the club beyond 2021.
Barring one or two, he is head and shoulder above his teammates in terms of quality, and could easily play in a better side.
