Allan Saint-Maximin has sent a message to Newcastle United supporters following yesterday’s draw with Southampton.
The Magpies got their first point of the 2021/22 season, with the game finishing 2-2 at St. James’ Park.
Steve Bruce’s side looked on course for all three points, with Saint-Maximin scoring on 91 minutes to hand the hosts a 2-1 lead.
But Jamaal Lascelles then gave away a penalty deep into injury time.
VAR adjudged Lascelles to have fouled former Toon player Adam Armstrong.
James Ward-Prowse stepped up to convert to the absolute dismay of the Newcastle faithful.
Although the Saints were the better side, it was massively disappointing to see poor defending cost Newcastle two points right at the death.
Such an end to the game will strengthen calls for the signing of a new central defender.
But given the club’s financial situation, few will be confident of a new face coming in.
Saint-Maximin has taken to social media to send a message to supporters.
He said simply: “Keep fighting.”
Saint-Maximin does his bit
Callum Wilson and Saint-Maximin did their bit yesterday.
Both got on the scoresheet, and all Newcastle had to do was see the game out.
But their work was undone by poor defending, and it was two points dropped.
If this type of thing becomes a regular occurrence, then it’s going to be very hard to envisage Saint-Maximin wanting to stay at the club beyond this season.
There can surely be no hope of retaining a player like this when he clearly has the talent to play in a better team.
