Newcastle United needed the international break.

Three consecutive losses are not exactly in the plan for this season, albeit some context must be applied in that Newcastle played Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton, three of England’s best teams.

Still, it is certainly a disappointing start to the campaign, with Eddie Howe’s side in big need of a win against Brentford after the international break.

More frustratingly, it could have been so much better.

Indeed, one player certainly seems to think so.

Alexander Isak says Newcastle should be doing much better

Speaking while away on international duty, Alexander Isak admitted as much.

The forward scored twice during the opening day rout of Aston Villa but has not found the net since, with Callum Wilson putting the pressure on Isak’s starting berth.

The Sweden international believes that even despite the tough games Newcastle faced, they should have been getting more out of them.

“It was almost a bit too good a start. Then we had a negative trend after that. It wasn’t the best feeling to leave with,” he told Aftonbladet, as translated by Sport Witness.

“We have had a small dip and have not reached the levels we know we can reach. We haven’t had an easy schedule in the first four, but we should have been able to take a little more than three points.”

Clearly, perspective must be applied when analysing Newcastle’s results.

City and Liverpool have been two of the strongest teams the Premier League has ever seen over the years, while Brighton thrilled last season too.

There is no need for panic stations in losing to them but that’s not to say it should merely be accepted. The landscape has changed for Newcastle these days, that’s what huge investment does to a football club.

They should be doing better.
