Alan Shearer names three types of players Newcastle need to sign in January

Newcastle United need to sign some players in January.

They needed to do it in the summer, but instead Joe Willock was the only arrival. Mike Ashley didn’t back Steve Bruce, leaving him with the same squad he had last season.

But things are different now. The change of ownership will bring a change in attitude.

And whoever the manager is in January will surely be backed with a decent transfer kitty – especially if the Magpies are still flirting with relegation.

But what kind of player should Newcastle sign? Alan Shearer has had his say.

Alan Shearer believes Newcastle need to sign ‘three or four’ players

Following the takeover, the club’s record scorer spoke to BBC Breakfast about where the new owners need to spend their money.

While stating that Newcastle need more than just players, he did highlight three areas that could be improved in January.

“It’s important that they don’t just spend it on the team,” he told BBC Breakfast.

“The ground is shabby, it needs improving. The training ground needs improving. They’re going to invest in the city which is a great thing for our people here in Newcastle because I think the city deserves that.

“But there’s no doubt they need new players in. They need another three or four to help them get out of that battle that they’re in in relegation, and I’m sure they’ll do that in January.

“We need another goalscorer, I think we need another centre-half and also a creative midfielder. But that’s easier said than done.”

The stadium and training ground certainly do need improving, and investment in the city will be very welcome.

But for results on the pitch, the quick fix will be in the January transfer window.

There are some talented players at the club right now who Bruce hasn’t been getting the best out of. But it’s very clear that the squad needs improving.

The three positions Shearer highlighted would certainly be a start.
