Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has delivered a defiant message to James Maddison ahead of his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur.
The 26-year-old has left Leicester City for Spurs, with Ange Postecoglu’s side paying £40million for the midfielder.
They have fended off interest from Newcastle, who have been tracking the England international since last summer. But it appears that the Magpies have got cold feet at the last minute, eventually deciding to distance themselves from him.
Eddie Howe will look elsewhere, while Maddison will hope that a move to Tottenham is the correct one. And the transfer comes at a time when Spurs’ best player could be on the way out.
Harry Kane‘s future is up in the air once again, with his contract due to expire next summer. Bayern Munich have made a bid for the England captain, opening the door for Kane to take his talents to the Bundesliga and finally win some silverware.

That would be a major blow for Tottenham, and it would also be an issue for Maddison in the eyes of Shearer.
Alan Shearer’s message to Maddison
In an article for the Athletic, Shearer has written about Kane potentially leaving Tottenham this summer, and has tied it back to their move for Maddison.
If I was Maddison, once I’d got personal terms out of the way, the first thing I’d be asking of Tottenham is assurances that Kane isn’t leaving,” he wrote.
“Imagine how p—– off you’d be if you’d pictured yourself creating chances for one of the world’s best finishers and then, bang — he’s gone.”

No uncertainty at Newcastle
While the future of one player should not dictate your decision to join a club, Maddison must have been appealed by the prospect of playing alongside Kane. He had a great partnership with Jamie Vardy at Leicester, and could create similar magic with Kane.
It puts a spotlight on the uncertainty at Spurs, who experienced a woeful season on and off the pitch last time out. They will hope to improve under Postecoglu, but losing Kane would be a major blow to those plans.
Of course, Maddison can do well at Tottenham without Kane, but a move to Newcastle would have given the attacking midfielder a clear direction.
It is obvious where Newcastle are going. There is ambition at every level, with the right people in place to turn those ambitions into a reality.
While Shearer is not saying Maddison should be joining Newcastle over Spurs, he has highlighted a key issue with his decision that could come to light if Kane departs.
