Alan Shearer has now given his verdict on whether or not he thinks Jose Mourinho would be a good fit to become Newcastle United manager.
With Eddie Howe under a lot of pressure in the last couple of months, questions were raised about if Newcastle would look to replace him with a big name manager, and Mourinho was often top of the list.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football Podcast, Shearer acknowledged that Mourinho has had a brilliant career, but wanted to reiterate his support for Howe at Newcastle.
Shearer says no to Mourinho at Newcastle
There’s a lot of debate about whether or not Howe can be the person to lead Newcastle to glory when neither have very much experience in winning trophies in the last 50 years.
Mourinho is a proven winner, though there is a feeling that his time has come and gone with his last three jobs with Man United, Tottenham and Roma all ending with his poorest win percentage of his career.
One thing the 61-year-old has managed to still do is win trophies almost wherever he’s been having won three in one season at Man United and then the Europa Conference League with Roma in 2022.
While Shearer admires that and believes Mourinho has had an ‘amazing’ career, he’s also very happy with what Howe is doing at the moment and thinks he should be the man to lead them on.
“He has had an amazing career, Jose. Where he goes next I’m not sure. But, no, I am very happy with Eddie Howe at Newcastle and the job he has done and the role he is doing.”

Howe is yet to have a chance to become successful
People will talk about how Newcastle need a proven winner to take them to the top and that Howe isn’t that, but surely he has to be given the chance first.
Every manager at some point will not have been a winning manager with an incredible record of trophies until they were given the opportunity to lead a team and showcase what they can really do.
Realistically Howe has still only had just over two years with Newcastle and the majority of that was spent trying to rebuild what was largely a Championship squad, and yet he’s taken them to the Champions League.
With the team still in the FA Cup season, who’s to stay this can’t be the start of an illustrious managerial career for the 46-year-old.
