It’s a reality Newcastle United fans may have to face soon with Gareth Southgate stepping down from the England job after Euro 2024 that Eddie Howe is likely on the shortlist to replace him.
Ever since Eddie Howe came into the fold at Newcastle and steered the club from the bottom of the Premier League to an 11th placed finish in half a season, there has been chatter that he’ll be the next England boss.
After last season, getting Newcastle to a domestic cup final and guiding the Magpies to a top-four finish and Champions League football for the first time in 20 years, those calls are only getting louder.
Eddie Howe has often been touted for the England job
Howe had always been earmarked for the England job even during his time at Bournemouth with the magnificent job he did for them, but with what he’s done for Newcastle, there’s even more demand for him to succeed Gareth Southgate in the National hotseat.
It turns Newcastle fans’ stomachs just thinking about it. Even with the shaky start to this campaign there aren’t many fans who’d want anyone else in the job right now.

Now, speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer have had their say on the Howe for England calls, and like most fans, Shearer was not keen, saying: “Leave it lads, leave it!”
Lineker wasn’t in the mood to be kind going on to push the subject saying: “I think he’s in line for the Saudi Arabia job! I think he’s probably the obvious one because there’s not a plethora of hugely successful talented English managers or coaches.”
Shearer conceded that Lineker was probably right, replying with: “There’s no doubt he would be very high on the list, and so he should be after the job he did last year.”
Howe won’t leave Newcastle so soon into his project. Will he?
As long as Howe is just honoured to be considered and doesn’t ditch his duties at Newcastle to take up the role, we’ll be fine.

In all honesty, I think Howe will become England manager at some point, but I think he’ll want to establish himself as a top club manager first, winning trophies with Newcastle.
Howe is still very young in managerial terms so he’s got plenty of time to take the England job, but right no he’s got a job to do at Newcastle. Do the right thing, Mr Howe. Just say no.
