Alan Shearer was there like a shot to show the love to Callum Wilson on social media last night after the striker bagged another goal.

Wilson now has four goals in six games this season in the Premier League and in truth probably should have had a hattrick last night if he’d been wearing his shooting boots.

Callum Wilson leapfrogged Sir Les Ferdinand in Newcastle’s Premier League top scorers chart with his goal last night too, which was made all the sweeter for Wilson as Ferdinand was on pundit duties for Sky Sports.

Shearer was quick to respond to Callum Wilson on Instagram

After the game Wilson posted a picture of his trademark celebration to Instagram along with the caption “What a game” to which Alan Shearer immediately replied with eight fire emojis, one for each goal in the game.

Wilson admitted to Sky Sports after the game that he was “frustrated” at half-time having gone back to the dressing room without a goal despite some golden opportunities, but the number nine kept plugging away and eventually got his reward.

What do good strikers do when they’ve not got their shooting boots on? Score with their head of course, which is exactly what Wilson did nodding hope a pinpoint cross from Kieran Trippier to make it a hattrick of assists for the captain.

Wilson will likely be on the bench for Newcastle on Wednesday

Eddie Howe has mentioned several times that he’s trying to manage Wilson’s fitness so despite his impressive goals per minute ratio this season, the striker is likely to be on the bench again on Wednesday when Newcastle take on Manchester City in the Carabao Cup.

I’m sure Wilson knows it’s coming, but as he mentioned yesterday, he’ll not be overly happy with missing out as he finds rotation frustrating.

As far as fans are concerned, as long as he keeps scoring when he’s on the pitch, minutes don’t matter.
