Alan Shearer reacts as Terry McDermott is inducted into the Newcastle Hall of Fame

Two legends were inducted into the Newcastle United Hall of Fame on Tuesday night – Terry McDermott and John Beresford.

The Newcastle United Foundation held their annual awards evening at St James’ Park, with Toon players from the past and present in attendance.

Eddie Howe and his backroom staff were there, alongside co-owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley, as well as summer recruits Darren Eales and Dan Ashworth.

Some of the Newcastle players who weren’t on international duty also appeared, including Sven Botman who looked ready to be the next James Bond villain.

At the Building Foundations Awards ceremony, various inspirational figures from across the region were recognised for their contributions to the Newcastle United Foundation.

There were also two club legends recognised on the night for their ‘outstanding contributions‘ to Newcastle United.

McDermott and Beresford join the Newcastle United Hall of Fame

McDermott and Beresford are very much deserving of their place in the club’s hall of game. They both played an important role at St James’ Park during a special time.

Beresford was part of Kevin Keegan’s famous side in the 90s, making almost 200 league appearances between 1992 and 1998.

The left-back was an important player for the Entertainers, and nearly helped Newcastle win the Premier League in 1996.

As for McDermott, he was part of the coaching setup at the time. He was Keegan’s assistant, while he also had a second spell with the Magpies in the 2000s.

He worked alongside Graeme Souness, Glenn Roeder, Sam Allardyce and then Keegan again. The 70-year-old also had two spells as a Newcastle player, featuring in the side that lost the 1974 FA Cup final to Liverpool.

During his time as assistant manager, McDermott worked with the club’s all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer.

And after the event, he paid tribute to his former coach. Shearer wrote on Twitter: “Fully deserved legend.”

There are now 25 people in the Newcastle United Hall of Fame. Other members include the aforementioned Shearer and Keegan. It also includes the likes of Sir Bobby Robson, Joe Harvey and Bob Moncur.

As the club continues to grow, it will be exciting to see which current Newcastle players could end up in the hall of fame.
