Newcastle United have been beaten 3-2 by Tottenham Hotspur.
The Magpies again failed to get their first win of the season, with Spurs the far superior side.
The atmosphere before kick-off was electric, with takeover figures Amanda Staveley, Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Yasir Al-Rummayan all in attendance for the game.
Their presence initially seemed to inspire Newcastle. Callum Wilson scored inside two minutes.
But the game quickly turned as Spurs’ quality shone through.
Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Kane and Heung-min Son put the visitors 3-1 up. Eric Dier put into his own net in the dying embers to give Newcastle faint hope.
Newcastle’s task of getting back on level terms was made much more difficult when Jonjo Shelvey was sent off.
The midfielder, back from injury, came on as a substitute in the second-half.
He got booked for a challenge on Ndombele. He then picked up another yellow card minutes later for stopping a surging Sergio Reguilon.
That gave Newcastle a mountain to climb, and fans were not happy with him.
And neither was Alan Shearer, who wrote on Twitter: “Stupid stupid stupid red card.”
On the game itself, the Match of the Day pundit added: “A very flat 2nd half. A professional job done by Spurs. Too good up front for Newcastle.”
Shelvey challenge silly
The challenge from Shelvey was absolutely ridiculous.
It is remarkable he hacked Reguilon down knowing he was on a yellow card.
He recently spoke about feeling nervous about his fate at the club following the takeover, within him only having 18 months left.
With moments like this, he can count himself lucky if he’s still a Magpie beyond the next transfer window.
