Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has named his Premier League team of the week – and it includes Allan Saint-Maximin.

The Frenchman is the first Magpie to feature in Shearer’s team this season, which is no surprise considering our rotten start to the campaign.

Newcastle are yet to win, and picked up their second point of the season against Leeds on Friday night.

But if it wasn’t for Saint-Maximin, it probably would have been another defeat.

The 24-year-old netted his second goal of the season, drawing Newcastle level after Raphinha put Leeds ahead.

It was a wonderful goal by Saint-Maximin, who danced past multiple defenders after being teed up by Joelinton. It was a huge goal for the Magpies and Steve Bruce, who had felt the wrath of Toon fans during the first half.

Saint-Maximin has been our best player this season, and was untouchable at times against Leeds. The majority of our chances came through him, carrying the team on his back as the lone striker.

Who else is in the Alan Shearer team of the week?

Unsurprisingly, Saint-Maximin is the only Newcastle player in the team.

He’s joined up front by former Toon striker Ivan Toney, who scored in Brentford’s 2-0 win over Wolves on Saturday.

The front three is completed by Watford’s Ismaila Sarr – a former Newcastle target.

The rest of the team includes four Chelsea players, two Saints, Matty Cash of Aston Villa and Manchester United stopper David De Gea.

It’s a testament to how good Saint-Maximin was against Leeds. Shearer easily could have picked someone else, with Leon Bailey and Mo Salah playing well against Everton and Crystal Palace respectively.

But it’s Saint-Maximin who made it, as he becomes the first Magpie to be named in Shearer’s team of the week. Hopefully it won’t be long until the next…
