Alan Shearer raved about Isaac Hayden for his performance in Newcastle United’s 2-1 win over West Bromwich Albion at the weekend.
The Magpies claimed another three points thanks to goals from Miguel Almiron and Dwight Gayle.
It saw Newcastle emerge from a recent Covid-19 outbreak at their training ground with aplomb.
Returning with a win was massive for Steve Bruce and his team, with plenty of players nursing the effects of the virus.
Club legend Shearer was particularly impressed with Hayden who filled in at centre-back alongside Ciaran Clark.
He was named in the Premier League Team of the Week by the ex-striker who was delighted with his performance.
He said: “Stepping into central defence after recovering from illness, Hayden provided extra mobility at the back for Newcastle.”
Has Hayden found a new home at centre-back?
Probably not but he’s certainly a nice option to have.
Every team needs a utility man and Hayden has perhaps showcased his ability to fulfill such a role.
The 25-year-old does anything asked of him with minimal fuss and he really is a model professional.
The ex-Arsenal trainee was brilliant on Saturday but when fit Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles will remain the first choice pairing.
Hayden has played 139 times for the Magpies, including nine appearances during 2020/21.
The natural midfielder penned a new deal in September keeping him at the club until 2026.
He looks to be enjoying his football once again and Bruce will hope to see more performances akin to that on Saturday.
Getting praise from a Newcastle legend is no mean feat and right now, Hayden is the talk of the town for his breathtaking display at the weekend.
