Newcastle United will have been looking on nervously as Manchester City won last night.
Pep Guardiola’s side took on Leeds United at the Etihad, and produced a scintillating performance. Man City smashed seven past Marcelo Bielsa’s men, extending their lead at the top of the table to four points.
While Leeds were poor, the champions were ruthless. It was an attacking masterclass, with Kevin de Bruyne netting a fabulous brace.

Newcastle welcome Manchester City to St James’ Park on Sunday, in a fixture that the Magpies have done well in recent years. Their past three Premier League clashes with City at SJP have been a win, a draw and a narrow defeat.
But Sunday could be different. Newcastle aren’t in good form, while Guardiola’s team look to be at their relentless best.
Toon legend Alan Shearer is certainly worried.
Golfer Lee Westwood tweeted ‘City are good’ following the 7-0 thrashing. Shearer responded, writing: “Very. Newcastle on Sunday”. The tweet was accompanied by two scared face emojis…
Things could get worse for Newcastle before Manchester City clash
The worrying thing is, Newcastle still have a fixture to play before they take on City. Even more worryingly, it’s against Liverpool.
The Reds are playing just as well, challenging for the Premier League title themselves. Jurgen Klopp’s side have been brilliant in front of goal – a terrifying prospect for Newcastle and their leaky defence.
To make matters worse, the game is at Anfield where the Magpies haven’t won in the league since 1994.
This is an ugly run of fixtures for Eddie Howe. It started with a 4-0 thumping from Leicester, and things are only getting tougher. Given our perilous position in the table, it’s difficult to watch.
Hopefully we can get through this spell without being embarrassed. But seeing Leeds lose 7-0 was hardly encouraging…
For now though, we must focus on Liverpool. Then we can worry about Manchester City. When it rains, it pours…
